Um, no. He can follow Jesus’s example and focus more on feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger and visiting the sick. In Matthew 25:31-46, where Jesus talks about the Son of Man’s separation of “the sheep from the goats,” sexual sins aren’t even mentioned. I think that the pope knows that the church has lost her moral high ground on some issues — especially given the scandal of lukewarm response to clergy abuse for so many years. Let’s take some time and focus more on poverty, war, violence and the rape of the environment.
