An Environment of Fear

Two months to go. My feelings are mixed, of course. I left the States before 9/11, and I fear that the country to which I am returning is very different from the country I left. I have to be there for at least three and a half months before I can escape again, so I will be trapped in their environment of fear. Here the dangers are more real — contaminated water, wide-spread violent street crime, terrible driving, etc. — but yet the fear is less, I think. There there are relatively few dangers, but yet there is more fear. Very strange.
